Remembrance Day is Monday, 11th November

Never forget what they gave so that we may live.
29th Oct 2024

The Guyra RSL sub-Branch will hold a brief Remembrance Day service at the Soldiers Memorial Hall in Bradley Street, commencing at 10.45am on Monday, 11th November.
Members of the community are invited to attend as a show of respect for all our servicemen and women who served in all conflicts. Each year on this day, Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11.00am in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.
The First World War ended more than a century ago. At 5am on 11 November 1918 in a railway carriage in France, representatives of France, Britain and Germany all signed a document that would put an end to four years of conflict. Six hours later – at 11am – those signatures would bring into effect the Armistice that ended World War I.
The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years. The moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the war.
Red poppies were among the first plants to spring up in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium after the conflict ended. For this reason, the red poppy is worn on Remembrance Day in memory of those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice.
Everyone is asked to stop what they are doing at 11am on Remembrance Day and observe a moment’s silence in memory of those who served and paid the supreme sacrifice in conflicts around the world..
