History was made at the Guyra saleyards this week with the first sheep sold from the newly constructed facilities. Work is still underway on a major upgrade of the Guyra yards, however an increased yarding has seen the pens put to the test for the first time.
The new yards feature a raised catwalk which enhances the experience for agents and buyers. It also allows sellers a better view of the interaction between buyers and agents.
Saleyards in both Guyra and Armidale are currently undergoing a multi-million dollar upgrade with funding of $9.7 from Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund. The work is being co-funded by the Australian and NSW Governments.
Work at the Guyra Saleyards will include demolition, removal and waste disposal of timber sheep yards, staged construction of steel sheep yards, upgrading stock watering system in sequence with yard construction, road upgrade around the yards and relocating cattle yards. It is expected that construction will be completed in the new year.
Overall the lamb market for this time of year is historically very high. Guyra graziers are benefitting from shortage of quality lambs in the south of the state due to dry conditions in Southern Riverina, Victoria and SA.
Lambs are currently making between 750c to 850c a kilo dressed weight.
The lead pen offered by Elders this week made $255, being second cross lambs sold on behalf of Geoffrey Bell.
