A decade-long tenure on the board of Can Assist has come to an end for Guyra’s Michael Jackson. He was appointed Director of the cancer charity in August 2014, serving as Vice President from December 2014 until November 2022.
Michael took on the role of President and Chair in November 2022, stepping down last month at the completion of his two year term.
To mark his many years of service to the organisation, Michael was recently presented with Honorary Life Membership of Can Assist by incoming chair Justine Turnbull.
Michael said he was proud to have been involved with Can Assist, which now has the second biggest volunteer base in NSW after the RFS.
These volunteers dedicate countless hours to providing support to patients in need, ensuring that every cent raised directly benefits those undergoing cancer treatment.
During his term he was involved with lobbying politicians and buinesses to raise the profile of the organisation. He also highlighted an increase in support available through the Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme (IPTAAS) as one of the achievements during his term.
“It is a great organisation to be involved with and I am proud of the work we have done over the years,” Michael said.
“One of the highlights has been getting to meet some incredibly generous people from all around the state who support Can Assist.”
On a local level he said the Can Assist continues to support local patients, with the Guyra branch being very active.
He would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the charity, particularly local donors and major sponsors who make the work of Can Assist possible.
“Can Assist’s continued success is only made possible through the generosity of our supporters.
“I want to personally thank everyone who has donated, and the many sponsors who help to keep us going.
“The future of this organisation is bright, and I am confident it will continue to make a difference for many more years to come.”
