Guyra’s Class of 1974 reunite

19th Nov 2024

The Guyra Central School Year 10 class of 1974 certainly had some catching up to do at their reunion which was held on November 9th.
Class mates travelled from all over to attend and they shared many memories, yarns and reflections, along with heaps of laughter.
From the 56 classmates sadly we have lost six of our peers and were unable to contact reach two of our peers.
It’s amazing how times flies, yet stands stills in a small way, it was just like yesterday when we started chatting, reflecting and reliving the great old days. So many great achievements have been made since leaving school.
Twenty six classmates attended and with partners, and there were apologies from fourteen others who wanted to attend but were prevented by other commitments.
The class is now scattered to places as far afield as Adelaide, Bundaberg, Toowoomba, Batemans Bay, Kippa-Ring, Wollongong and Victoria. Almost half of the class have remained in the Guyra area.
Memories shared were of teachers, detentions, antics of classmates, walking to school in the snow and handball rallies in the quad.
The original uniform came up often, mainly with the girls with our blazers, gloves and berets and the tunic length checks at assembly. And of course the bright yellow sports uniform of tunic and bombay bloomers in those early years.
The most common chats were about the joys of growing up in Guyra and how times have changed, how we all felt safe and knew to be home when on dark, and the things we got up to with our friends.
Many said it was the best place to grow up, we were never bored, there was always something to do like sport, fishing, swimming in creeks or the pool, camping at Copeton, riding bikes or visits to friends.
The overall outcome was the night was far too short and we need to catch up more frequently as it was just like it was yesterday as the memories flowed and filled the room.
We would like to thank the staff at Guyra Central School and the Guyra Library for helping us to gather some of the information for our booklet.
