2025 Citizen of the Year nominees

Community members who have made significant contributioons to the Guyra community will be acknowledged at an Australia Day Dinner which will be held at the Guyra Bowling Club on Saturday January 25th.
This year there are four nominees for Citizen of the Year and good nominations across other categories.
Awards will be presented for achievements by individuals and groups during the preceding year.

Wayne Mendes
Member of NSW Volunteer Rescue Association since 1986.
Has held the position of Deputy Captain and then Captain since 2010. Wayne received NSW Premier’s Bushfire Emergency Citation for valuable contribution assisting in NSW bushfires of 2019-2020.
As part of the VRA he has participated in many significant events – Moree Floods, F1-11 crash, road crash rescues and land searches.
During Covid Wayne helped deliver groceries and household goods to community members who were in home isolation.
Wayne voluntarily offers his first aid expertise at community events such as seniors bus trips, ANZAC day service and many other events.

James Warren
In 2020 James established the Australian Poetry Hall of Fame. Providing a platform for poets, like-minded individuals and inspiration for future generations.
James has organised numerous events and initiatives. Some of these include open mic, 2023 NSW Bush Poetry Championships, workshops, Australian Poetry Film Contest, and Poets on the Mountain Festival, just to name of few.
James brings many diverse artists and events to Guyra, providing social opportunities and connections with the Saturday markets, Fiori Musicali chamber Choir, Bush Poets, workshops, yoga, theatre and music events.

Mitchell Hope
Over the years Mitchell has supported, aided and helped many different groups and committees in the Guyra Community.
He has been a part of the St Mary of the Angels P&F branch and of the Student Advisory Council committee.
At St Mary’s he has supported the school in many different areas including a memorial garden, fundraisers for the local community, giving his time to help at the Guyra Show and at the Lamb and Potato Festivals over the years and helped with the appointment of teachers.
Mitchell has also been nominated in the in the Community Service category.

Donna Davidson
Great ambassador for the community with great ideas for fundraising. Fundraising for Bald Blair School, Black Mountain School and Guyra Central School. Has a well organised committee. Fund raiser for Luke Brown who sadly passed away.
Donna was the instigator, with some friends to form the Progress Association for Guyra. This group has achieved great progress towards beautifying the Guyra area.
Donna was the brains, with her artist friend Kay Smith, to do murals around the town and this has been great for tourism and brightening the street.
A great supporter of the Guyra Show Society and worked tirelessly for the campdraft and pony club.
