Successful season for Guyra Hockey teams

10th Sep 2024

The 3rd grade hockey, wow what can be said. We had the best time, new and old players joined forces and enjoyed playing this year, learning, and trying new positions, gaining experience, and having the goalie yell or laugh at you when you missed the ball. Bruises aplenty, some from teammates (sorry).
There was always the Shamrock spirit of just hitting the field and having fun, the team pulling together when needed and helping others, when necessary, even the opposition. This year we grew as a team and only hope to do the same next year, maybe even win a few.
The 2nd Grade woman have had a successful season finishing in second place. This year we have been joined by a couple more very handy Walcha players. There have been plenty of laughs, plenty of fun poked at teammates and most notably - very few cards handed out.
We played our Major semi-final on Saturday against Armidale’s Flamingos. After the best part of four gruelling quarters and no score on the board, one of our of Walcha superstars Emma, put the first and only goal in, off a penalty stroke with four minutes left on the clock, putting us straight through to the final dance.
We will play the Grand Final on the 22nd of September at 12pm at UNE’s Hockey complex, we welcome all the support we can gather. The 2nd Grade ladies will be wearing pink socks for their finals series in support of a valued teammate and woman everywhere who are and have been affected by breast cancer.
The 2024 season for the Guyra Men’s hockey team has been very successful again, with Guyra fielding three solid teams of the eight-team Hockey New England men’s competition.
The club has welcomed a number of new players this season of all skill levels, that has boosted our club profile and culture of being an inclusive club.
All three teams have made into the semi-finals, with one team successfully through to the Grand Final and the other two teams playing off next weekend for their grand final positions.
If you would like to witness some prime-time hockey, played by some extraordinary athletes of many skill levels, please come down and support the teams next Sunday from 10:30am.
On a more serious note, the Guyra Hockey Club held a fundraiser in August for the MS Australia Foundation in honour of one of our young club members who has recently been diagnosed with the life changing disease. We had a wonderful night which was attended and supported by many of our generous community members and local businesses.
On the night we raised $8200 – once again, we would like to thank everyone who came and danced the night away with us and our fabulous sponsors of the evening: Riverside Holiday Resort Urunga, Rob Lenehan, Anna Kemph Photography, DLF Seeds, Guyra Fuels, Dasha’s Hardware, Supermoto, KMC Pest Management, Elders Guyra, SportsPower Armidale, Costas Group, Niknee Designs, Rafters Café and Restaurant, Gus Mackie Dental, Beach and Winnie, Beautiful Blooms Guyra, Project K, IGA Guyra, Glenavon Angus, Inverell Bearing Centre, Black Mountain Nursery, Guyra Café, Sisson Family Butcher.
