Guyra’s Ann Shipman recently travelled to Brisbane to compete at the Ekka in the ladies woodchopping and sawing events. This was her first major show competing on an individual basis, as she had previously competed at the Royal Easter Show in the under 21 NSW team.
The events she competed included Jill and Jill DHS (Double Handed Sawing) Championship, Jack and Jill DHS Championship of Australia, Jill and Jill DHS Handicap, Jack and Jill DHS Handicap, Women’s 275mm U/H Championship of Australia, Women’s 275mm U/H Handicap and Father and Child 250mm Combo Relay Handicap in which she cut the Underhand and her father, Michael, cut the Standing Block.
“Unfortunately, there are little to no Ladies events around our area, so I travel to Queensland to compete against other women,” Ann said.
“Queensland really promotes women in woodchopping, and I have made some great friendships with my co-competitors.”
In the lead up to the Ekka, Ann competed at Mudgerabah Show Woodchop where she came away with a 1st place in the Jill and Jill DHS, the Jill Single Sawing and the Jack and Jill DHS Handicap. This was no mean feat with all the sawing logs being 20” in diameter. She also placed 3rd in both the Novice and Ladies Underhand events.
Ann and Michael have been competing as sawing partners for eight years and it is only in the last 12 months she has decided to make her mark in the underhand events. Ann puts her recent success down to her coach and mentor, Michael.
Whilst Ann did not get through the heats at the Ekka, she was definitely not embarrassed by her performance.
