First win for Guyra cricketers

19th Nov 2024

Guyra has recorded its first win of the season in the senior ranks with Guyra 7/180 defeating Easts Yellow 10/175 in the second grade competition.
Easts won the toss and chose to bat first, with the Guyra bowlers sharing the spoils. Ben Jackson was the best taking 3/13 and also starred in the field, taking three catches including a caught and bowled. Other wicket takers were Tahmani Jackson 1/44, Tom Chard 1/30, Alistair Connors 1/28 and Heath Dowsett 2/28.
They say catches win matches and, with all but two wickets being caught, this proved true for the Guyra side. Emory Levy, Tahmani Landsborough, Alistair Connors and Al Boney recorded catches in the field, with Kyle Mongta taking one behind the stumps.
Chasing 175, openers Ben Jackson (32) and Tim Lloyd (67) got the team off to a good start. Tim almost carried his bat through the innings and was out with the score on 154. Kyle Mongta (20), Tahmani Landsborough (21*) and Allan Boney (18*) also batted well.
Other results in second grade saw Walcha/Uralla 7/91 defeat City/UNE 10/88 and East Green 6/135 defeat Hillgrove10/133.
Guyra’s third grade side were unlucky, going down to the combined Walcha/Uralla side in the game played at the Guyra Sporting Complex fields. The opposition won the toss and sent Guyra into bat first.
Jack Lockyer dominated the batting, getting the first century of the season and finishing the day with 106 before he was run out. Les Perrett (39) and Lincoln Brown (13*) were the best of the rest with the final tally being 8/218 off 40 overs.
Guyra’s bowlers almost did the job, however Walcha/Uralla inched ahead in the 37th over finishing the day on 8/220 to take the victory.
Cooper Brennan managed a five wicket haul, conceding 42 runs off his eight over stint. Other wicket takers were Les Perrett 1/26, Tommy Mitchell 1/16, and Lincoln Brown 1/8. Jack Lockyer showed he has safe hands taking four catches behind the wicket.
Hillgrove 8/122 defeated TAS 10/121 and Ex Services 7/93 defeated City/UNE 10/91 to complete the round.
It was a much improved performance by both the Guyra sides and hopefully the form will continue to improve as the season rolls on.
