Guyra roared back into Group 19 with two wins from two against Narwan at the New Red Hill on Sunday.
Despite a player shortage, the Spudettes skipped clear of the Eels in the leaguetag game to win 34-12, while the Super Spuds overcame a terrible start to the second half to scrape home 22-20 in A grade.
Tanieka Dailey scored a hat-trick for the Spudettes and was instrumental in Kiarna Landsborough’s try as Guyra turned a 12-all halftime scoreline into a comfortable victory.
It was 12-nil early when Abby Davies opened the scoring in her first game for Guyra, before Dailey showed her soccer skills on the way to a long-range try.
Narwan fought back before halftime but the second half was all Guyra.
In a four-try spree, Sophie Mitchell also capped a great debut with a try of her own.
Dailey (3), skipper Danielle Sutton (2) and Mitchell (1) scored club points, while Davies was voted as players’ player.
The girls played with only 12 and a few more signings would be welcome to help boost their numbers.
The men started in similar fashion with a try to Ock Atkin and a brilliant chip and chase effort from halfback Wyatt Spiteri-Roberts setting up a 12-nil lead.
It was all Guyra in the first half, but the first 15 minutes of the second half was anything but.
Narwan ran in three tries as the Spuds were starved of possession and the Eels led 16-12.
When Guyra finally got some ball Narwan was reduced to 12 men and it was Matt Sisson who crossed to lock it up at 16-all.
Then Atkin ran in his second to give Guyra an important six-point advantage.
Narwan scored again late and had a final chance to snatch the win, but the Spuds held on 22-20.
Atkin marked his first game in the top grade for Guyra with the players’ player award.
Hooker Archie Dowden had a blinder and polled three club best and fairest points, Garth Walls picked up two for his big work-rate up front and Spiteri-Roberts took one point.
Among Guyra’s debutantes were youngsters Dowden, Atkin, Rob Sisson, Ryan Jones, Riley Campbell and Blake Phillips and all performed admirably.
After Easter the Guyra teams face Tingha at Tingha before returning home for a date with premiers Warialda.
