Freezing cold stimulates great play
On the freezing cold day of Saturday, 6th July, Guyra hosted the Tingha Tigers. Only 3 games were played in the icy cold conditions, but all our Guyra players turned up and played some great footy.
The Under 12’s took to the field pumped up ready to play some football. From the get-go the boys ran the ball well meeting the defence and looking for the gaps.
Great support play from Braxton Hutton saw him cross the line for 2 tries and Sammuel Torrens ploughing through the defenders to earn himself a try. Wonderful sportsmanship by Seth Patterson earned 3 points from the referee.
This team is really putting in the effort at training and on game days, and fingers crossed, will get them into the finals. The score was Guyra 48 Tingha 16.
The Intermediate League Tag girls had a convincing win over Tingha 54 to 6. This team is a great attacking team but back it up with great defence/tagging. Always
backing each other up to stop the
opposition.
Just about every Guyra girl got a try in this game and this shows the talent right across the team. Keep up the great football and commitment at training as this will keep you heading in the right direction for
finals time.
The Under 16’s team proudly wore the NAIDOC playing jumpers in their game against Tingha. The boys were slow to start, letting Tingha in for a couple of tries and putting Guyra on the back foot.
With some stern words from the coach at half time, Guyra came out and dominated Tingha in the second half. Some great attacking play by Darcey Heagney and Hugo Brazier in the half positions set up Guyra’s forwards to split the defence and cross the try line.
With this round of footy falling in NAIDOC week, Guyra Junior Rugby League celebrated and acknowledged our indigenous players and Guyra’s indigenous culture. A Welcome to Country and a smoking ceremony was done by Treymane Patterson.
The under 16’s team played in indigenous jumpers designed by Ivy West and sponsored by the Guyra Local Aboriginal Lands Council, TFSS (Tamworth Family Support Services), Armidale Building Supplies, Rock Eater and The Guyra Café.
After the game, all were invited to attend the Guyra Bowling Club for an auction and disco night to continue the NAIDOC celebrations. The raffle was drawn with great prizes won – Painted surfboard, signed Josh Addo-Carr Bulldogs Jumper and Bulldogs Merchandise.
Auctioned off was a signed Deadly Jumper and a signed Newcastle Nights Jumper. The real excitement of the night was the auctioning of the 20 Indigenous designed Under 16’s jumpers with great results. After this, the music came on and the dance floor was full of kids and adults having a great night.

Many thanks to all the sponsors, people who bought raffle tickets and to all who put their hand up during the auctions. The generosity from locals and out of towners was amazing!
